Bethan Laker typically works with bold, wonky line, collage and print to produce charming, witty and colourful responses to everyday life.
She takes a particular pleasure in the little things, such as television adverts, vintage packaging, charity shop cutlery and period furniture. The loves of her life include typography, collage, riding her bike, cakes and her husband Matt (all of which feature in her work).
Since graduating, from Norwich School of Art and Design (2000) she has regularly produced work for magazines, childrens books, promotional material and events. Clients include Mslexia Magazine, ZedSaid and Transport for London (TFL).
Her books sell at Dia Beacon New York, Edinburgh Fruitmarket Gallery and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
Not shy of a challenge, Bethan welcomes unusual requests. One of her favourite projects, commissioned by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, was to create a 100m tablecloth for a massive Mad Hatters Tea Party, held on the Swing Bridge across the River Tyne.
She is a member of the Association of Illustrators and a founding member of
Set of Drawers, a Newcastle-based illustration collective. She also facilitates illustration workshops for various agencies and age groups.
Bethan loves to talk pictures, so if youd like to chat, please do get in touch. She can be easily contacted at info@bethanlaker.com but if you fancy a cup of tea (and perhaps a scone) you can visit her studio at
The Mushroom Works, Newcastle upon Tyne.
